Nourishment…

Nourishment /ˈnʌrɪʃm(ə)nt/
NOUN
1. The food necessary for growth, health and good condition
‘tubers from which plants obtain nourishment’
figurative, ‘she was starved of emotional nourishment’

2. The action of nourishing someone or something
‘the nourishment of our bodies and of our minds’

Nourishment goes beyond the food we eat. The idea that nourishment is an act of self care and nurturing via a multitude of means for our body, mind and soul is the basis of my approach to health and nutrition. Nourishment as an act of care, towards our selves or others can entail a huge variety of actions: eating, exercising, playing music, socialising, reading, spending time in nature, participating in religious practice, the scope really is very broad.

The Nourishment Ninja as a blog started as a progression of growth from my old blog, Dear Darling Sanity, which was focused around exploring living with mental illness and caring for mental health. I wanted to contribute to the conversation of de-stigmatising mental health by exploring my own journey and reflections of living with Bipolar Disorder and Trauma Related Dissociation. The Nourishment Ninja is a direction of growth incorporating my knowledge in nutrition and health into a holistic platform from which I can contribute to the conversation online.

Personally, I have had to work hard at my own growth through a dark journey with mental health that initially wound me in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services at 15 to the current day. I still have multiple appointments and people involved in my care but this is about moving forwards, growing and becoming someone I want to be rather than the sum of an illness that was bestowed onto me irrespective of my wishes as mental illness often does.

Professionally, I am currently studying a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition and Health at Roehampton University, London. I am not yet qualified as a nutritionist and don’t claim to be. So far I am on a journey towards learning the necessary components to become a practicing nutritionist. Along the way I will be writing and talking about current issues in the nutrition worlds, including pop culture. Prior to studying nutrition I worked in the fashion industry as an editorial assistant and features writer for a few fashion publications, online and print. This experience has most definitely contributed to where I am now, the core values and beliefs I have in regards to nutrition and health, my pure skepticism of prescription diets and advocating weight loss for health. I believe that there is a better way to improve the health and relationships with food in the UK that go beyond dieting, counting calories and weighing in. You will not find me advocating these behaviours and approaches to nutrition but rather taking a holistic approach to positive nutrition.

As for the ninja bit, I’ve always fancied myself as a bit of an adventure ninja from partying and making mad memories in my teens to running marathons and climbing mountains today.
